We are naming this 6 pack of exceptional white wines after Jim, one of our loyal customers and an avid white wine lover. He requested wine by female winemakers and prefers organic/biodynamic wines. The challenge here was to not include chardonnays, even storied ones from Burgundy! Here at Kogod Liquors, we feel that great grapes shine even more in white wines: there is less room for intervention by the winemaker during the wine making process. Also, seafood dish can only be enhanced by that glass or two of white wine.
Santo Assyrtiko - White from Santorini, Greece: This wine is made from 100% assyrtiko grape from the island of Santorini (yes that island that is so ubiquitous on IG with their white roofs and blue sea). Santorini as an appellation boasts one of the oldest average age for vines: vines younger than 50 years old are considered young and most vines are between 70-100 years old. This creates one of the most concentrated white wines that shows flavors of lemon rind, pineapple in addition to zippy minerality. Pair this with oysters or aged cheese.
Gaspard Sauvignon Blanc - Gaspard is made from Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, a region also famous for its Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc. However, the use of native yeasts and the aging on fine lees give this wine honeysuckle and jasmine floral notes and tropical fruit notes, along with a long finish.
Meinklang Burgenlandwhite: 50% Gruner Veltliner, 40% Welchriesling and 10% Muskat. This refreshing wine shows citrus and white flowers on the nose. On the palate, there is lemon, green apple and some lemongrass on the palate with great acidity. Meinklang is a family-run biodynamic farm where a resident herd of cows provide natural fertilizers while rows of vines are interspersed with green plants and wild herbs in order to promote natural harmony between species.
Argiolas Costamolino Vermentino: This wine from the island of Sardinia is made with 100% Vermentino grapes. This is the quintessential seafood wine because of minerality, acidity and subtle tropical fruit and ripe apricot notes that accompanies hints of roasted almond and honey. Spaghetti alle vongole, steamed lobster with butter or seafood risotto are recommended pairings for this wine.
Calcarius Bianco Puglia: 100% Bombino Bianco is made with organic/biodynanically farmed grapes from soil with high concentration of calcareous rocks. As a result, the label refers to the Calcium (Ca) as an element on the periodic table, with atomic number 20 and atomic weight of 40.08. On the nose, there is prominent lemon and lemongrass and on the palate, there is a mix of bright lemon acidity as well as ripe apricot and quince notes.
Lafage Cuvee Centenaire: The label of the wine refers to the age of 100+ year of vines whose organic grapes (Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris) get blended with younger 20 year old organic Roussanne. This wine is both fresh and rich, showing off notes of citrus, ripe white peach and even a bit of tropical fruits such as pineapple on the backbone of medium acidity and long finish that one would come to expect from old vine wines.
