Bubbles for Beethoven

$97.99

10% of all purchases from the Bubbles for Beethoven Wine Pack will be donated to the National Philharmonic to continue their mission of bringing free live music and music education even during the pandemic. This wine pack is especially meaningful for us because wines have been selected and paired with music by our wine manager, Jennifer Fritz Kim, who has previously performed with the NatPhil as a violinist.

Meinklang "Prosa" Rosé Frizzante: Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in G Major, Op. 40

Pinot noir is difficult and fickle, but creates sublime wines. Likewise, Beethoven Romance in G Major opens with difficult and fickle double stops yet creates a serene, hymn-like atmosphere. Meinklang “Prosa” Rosé Frizzante is Beethoven’s rondo in a wine form, contrasting the silken, red berry-noted pinot noir with lively bubbles and acidity. A hand-harvested biodynamic wine made with indigenous yeast in Austria under the guidance of Angela and her husband Werner Michlits, Meinklang “Prosa” captures the essence of easy drinking sparkling rosé , full of strawberries and hidden herbaceous spiciness with refreshing bubbles.  Meinklang means “My Sound” in German, symbolizing the importance of creating harmony with nature and vineyard’s surroundings.

Achillée Crémant d'Alsace Zero Dosage: Beethoven Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 in F Major, Op. 50

One of Beethoven’s sunniest moments in his symphonic literature is the pure and soaring theme of the solo violin in Beethoven’s Romance for Violin Number 2 in F Major. The famously sunny flavors of Alsace, including ripe peach, apricot, honey and even pineapple notes, are on the nose and the palate of Achillée Crémant d'Alsace Zero Dosage. It is hard to believe there is no added sugar (technical definition of Zero Dosage) to this biodynamic sparkling wine, as it is common in most sparkling wines made with the traditional method.  This is another example of biodynamically farmed wine from a family-owned winery that shows how well wine can be made from a field blend of Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Chardonnay.

Laurent-Perrier Cuvee Brut: Beethoven Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21

The last movement of the First Symphony is a bottle of champagne ready to pop. The movement begins in Adagio with a fragmented 3 note scale, starting from G.  Each successive itineration of the phrase adds one more note of the G scale and raises the musical tension, until finally it reaches the F, indicating a dominant 7th chord of the C major, the key of the Allegro section.  The struggle to go from G to F is reminiscent of the tug of pressure one feels when opening a champagne’s mushroom shaped cork. After the “pop,” then the symphony rushes forward with musical bubbles shooting up with ever present upward scales in 16th notes.  La Cuvee from Laurent-Perrier is made with minimum 50% chardonnay, minimum 30% pinot noir and rest with pinot meunier.  This Champagne embodies the fresh style with notes of lemon, green apple, zingy peach to accompany perfectly with the effervescent ending to the Beethoven’s First Symphony and this concert celebrating Beethoven’s 250th anniversary.
